Calm before the chemo

We are on vacation this week in Westport, WA: a family tradition. Perfect timing, as my radiation side effects subsided about a week ago.

On this vacation, I’ve been focused on a healthy diet, exercise, and minimizing stress. I think I am mostly succeeding 🙂 although I did get pretty angry the other day, when I was trying to get a clear answer about billing for upcoming chemo (I think I have this question mostly answered now).

To answer Kurt’s question from my last post, I have indeed been making smoothies, every day! I’ve been tinkering with the ingredients. This one had spinach, almond butter, avocado, frozen banana, strawberries, blueberries, protein powder, and oat milk.

While the resulting smoothie is green from the spinach, you can’t taste it actually; it’s masked by the bananas and berries. I’m hoping to continue this throughout the chemo process, as a way to ensure I’m getting enough protein and nutrients during expected variability in my appetite.

Before we left for vacation, I picked up a prescription for Nivestym from Fred Hutch. These are syringes that they said to store in the refrigerator; I may need to use these if my white blood cell levels are too low. It will be one of many topics covered in my initial day of chemo and meetings, this coming Monday.

  1. I tend to use chocolate protein powder, so my smoothies are brown, which is not the color most people are hoping for in a smoothie. I hope you have a wonderful rest of your vacation.

    • Haha!
Hey Kurt, I’m curious if you have a standard list of smoothie ingredients you work with, or do you experiment as well? (I saw you mentioned hemp hearts, peanut butter powder etc in my last post). Do you do smoothies every day? Cheers!

      • I don’t make smoothies every day, probably not even every week. I make more in the summer since I like to use frozen fruit or ice cubes. I am an occasional experimenter. Recently I have added egg whites I bought at Costco as a protein source (not much flavor as far as I could tell). I mostly use protein powder, green powder, fruit and water. I will sometimes add peanut butter powder, avocado, beet powder, maca powder and/or egg whites. I am not one that eats for taste, I am going for the nutrients first and taste second (looks are last)
